Addressing the press in Sydney, Turnbull announced that this was a great day because “We have resolved this election and we have done so peacefully”. Turnbull added that this was something that should be celebrated and “not be taken for granted”.

The coalition is believed to able to secure at least 74 seats in the lower house of parliament, the House of Representatives, and expressed that it is confident that it can win at least two out of five seats still in doubt to obtain the required majority to form a government.

Should the LNP be unable to win at least two of the five seats it may have to be forced to negotiate with members from smaller parties, such as the Green Party that secured a significant amount of voters this time around. Alternatively, Turnbull could try to form a minority government and negotiate on an issue to issue basis.

Turnbull stressed the importance of Australia’s two major political parties working together in parliament for the good of the country. He said: “It’s vital that this parliament works. It is vital that we work together and as far as we can try to find ways upon which we can all agree. … “We are trustees for future generations. Everything we do is about the future.”

Ironically, Turnbull’s statement comes after an election that led many Australians, including Dennis Altman is a Professorial Fellow in Human Security, La Trobe University, to stress that the outcome of the election has revealed the end to the rusted two-party system. Turnbull’s call on Labor for “cooperation” also reveals that the two-party system in Australia, not unlike to that in the USA, largely is a one-party system. That is, both parties have largely been coopted by the same oligarchical structures.

Addressing the press in Melbourne, Bill Shorten conceded that even though counting continues, there is no doubt that the coalition will for either a majority or minority government. He noted that Labor  will cooperate with the LNP as much as possible to give Australians a functioning parliament. He added, however, that Labor will continue to fight for its key policies. Despite the election loss it is likely that Shorten has the support of the Labor to continue as leader of the party due to the Labor winning as many as 69 seats compared to 55 in the 2013 election
