Barnett perplexed over Gillard’s attacks

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett seems relieved Prime Minister Julia Gillard has gone after two days of sniping over GST revenues.

The pair didn’t meet during the PM’s visit but traded barbs over WA’s share of the GST.

On Thursday Ms Gillard accused Mr Barnett of not doing enough to help people who were not getting the benefits of the resources boom.

She said he and WA Treasurer Christian Porter should stop blaming Canberra for their financial woes.

WA’s share of GST revenue will be slashed from 72 cents in the dollar to 55 cents from July 1, an estimated shortfall of up to $800 million.

Mr Porter this week cited that shortfall as a reason for his order to government departments to make savings of more than $1 billion over the next four years.

In Perth on Wednesday, Ms Gillard challenged Mr Porter to step down if he couldn’t balance his state’s books with $800 million less GST revenue.

But Mr Porter hit back, saying that on the prime minister’s own reasoning, Mr Swan should be the one to step aside after failing to deliver surpluses.

A seemingly exasperated Mr Barnett on Thursday told reporters he didn’t know what was driving Ms Gillard.

“I don’t know what she’s been eating or what’s doing this to her.

“She lands in Western Australia, attacks me, attacks Christian Porter, wants to take all our mining revenue, doesn’t want to give us any GST, criticises everyone, then she’s going to jump on the plane and go back.

“Well, see you later, Julia,” Mr Barnett said.

Ms Gillard said on Thursday that not all families in WA were benefiting from the resources boom.

“I want to make sure those families get something from this resources boom – that is the difference between Premier Barnett and me.”

Ms Gillard said on other matters she had worked “productively and well” with the premier, including striking health reform and skills agreements.
