Batman killer behaves oddly at court

Looking dazed and confused, 24-year-old James Holmes behaved in a strange way during his first public appearance on Monday.

Shuffling into the courtroom, the Ph.D. student of neuroscience at the University of Colorado-Denver graduate school sat motionlessly next to a defense lawyer, looking down and then straight ahead without blinking for long periods of time and remained silent.

Holmes opened fire on viewers during the screening of the new Batman movie, The Dark Night Rises, in Century Theater Cinema in Aurora near Denver in early Friday.

According to local police Chief Dan Oates, the suspect was armed with an AR-15 automatic rifle, 12 rounds of bullets, a 40mm pistol, and two teargas canisters.

The masked gunman, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest, was immediately arrested in the rear parking lot of the movie theater without any resistance.

Holmes has not been officially charged because, under Colorado law, Monday’s appearance is called ‘an advisement’ where the accused will reportedly be asked if he knew why he was arrested, jailed, and brought before a judge, while being informed of his rights.

The US police said on Friday that Holmes had had his hair painted red to look like the Batman movie’s villain. “We have some information, most of it is public. It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was ‘The Joker,’ obviously the ‘enemy’ of Batman,” said New York Police commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Also on Friday, US officials said that Holmes had bought over 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet in the past two months.
