Beanbag shots end 44-hour Melbourne siege

A man holed up for almost two days in a Melbourne home was shot by non-lethal bullets as he emerged armed with a gun.

After firing about a dozen shots during the tense 44-hour siege, Christopher Dean Binse, 43, emerged from the Sterling Drive, Keilor Park house threatening police with a firearm about 2.15am (AEST) on Wednesday, Assistant Commissioner Steve Fontana said.

“He wanted to go out in a blaze,” Mr Fontana told ABC Radio in Melbourne on Wednesday.

When Binse refused to drop the weapon, police fired non-lethal rounds of “bean bag shots”, bruising Binse before arresting him, he said.

“It was very tense for us at the time,” he said.

Police did not storm the residence for fear Binse had possible explosives, and the possibility of endangering his girlfriend, who was holed up in the house for 38 hours. She emerged about 6.15pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

“We know that he had more than one firearm at his address and plenty of ammunition,” Mr Fontana told Fairfax Radio.

Police have said Binse’s girlfriend was not a hostage.

But Fontana said this was not clear, and the situation could have changed as the crisis progressed.

The woman came out shortly after six loud noises were heard outside the house about 6.15pm (AEST) on Tuesday, which police said were not gunshots but “operational tactics”.

The girlfriend helped police, providing information on Binse’s demeanour and firearms in the house.

More than a dozen families were forced from their homes and have not been allowed to return home. Sterling Drive remains closed as the siege area is now a crime scene.

Binse was assessed by paramedics and taken into custody.
