HOMICIDE detectives are investigating the death of an 11-month-old boy who died just minutes after his parents had reported a burglary at their rural Victorian home.

The puzzling series of events unfolded in Bendigo, about 150km north of Melbourne, the same night as two other reported burglaries in the area.

Police say they will look for links between the child’s death and the Long Gully neighbourhood crime spree, which stretched from late last night to early this morning.

Inspector Mark Edwards of Bendigo police said officers were called to the home in Eaglehawk Rd, Long Gully about 7am.

He said that while travelling there they received a call that an 11-month-old boy had been taken to hospital.

Ambulance Victoria told the Herald Sun paramedics confirmed the child was taken to hospital with signs of injury.

Paramedics had been called to the home around 7.20am and found a baby boy was in cardiac arrest.

The child was taken to hospital in a critical condition but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Insp Edwards said police were investigating both the death and the reported burglary.

He said there were two other burglaries in the area last night but he could not say if there was any link to the theft reported to have happened at the Eaglehawk Rd property.

“All we know at this stage is that the parents reported the burglary and then some time later we got the report that the child was taken to hospital with injuries,” InspEdwards said.

“They were the last people to see the boy in good health or alive, so they are naturally assisting us with our inquiries.”

The whereabouts of the parents after they were questioned by police is unknown. They have one other child, he said.

He said a post mortem would be conducted tomorrow to determine how the child had died.

He said he was not aware of police being called to the property recently.

Their three-bedroom home, now sealed behind crime scene tape, is listed for sale, although some neighbours said they didn’t know who lived there.

Police have not released any further information, citing a need to obtain the results of a post-mortem examination in order to confirm a cause of death.
