‘Black teen case dividing US racially’

According to the USA Today/Gallup survey, 73% of African Americans believe that Zimmerman, who is white, would already have been arrested had the victim been white, not black. This is while only 33% of white Americans hold such an opinion.

At the same time, 52% of white Americans believe that race has not played a factor in how the case is being handled.

Thousands of demonstrators have marched across the US, calling for justice in the February 26 killing of 17-year-old Martin as he was visiting his father in Sanford, Florida.

Critics of how Martin’s case is being handled say this is a clear case of racism.

“A black youth is considered as the number-one enemy and danger in the United States. His existence means that the person is a threat to something,” Muslim American activist and director of Masjid Al-Islam in Washington D.C., Imam Abdul Alim Musa told Press TV.

Jeffrey McNeil, a newspaper columnist who has been following Trayvon Martin’s case closely and how it’s pervaded the racially mixed culture in the United States, says the matter is a highly polarizing issue, and is similar to a basketball game with a historic rivalry.

“It is more about injustice and inequality, where an unarmed teen was shot, with a bag of Skittles, after the police told this guy not to go and follow him,” McNeil noted.
