Brother appears in court on McGurk murder

ONE of the brothers charged with conspiracy in the murder of Sydney businessman Michael McGurk has made his first appearance in court.

A shoeless Nizar Samman, 33, appeared in the dock at Sutherland Local Court  today.

Samman and his younger brother, Ahmad Samman, were arrested yesterday in Sydney’s south and charged with conspiracy to kill McGurk at his Cremorne home in September 2009.

Court documents show that Nizar Samman accompanied his brother on one of the three occasions that Ahmad Samman visited McGurk’s home in June and July of that year.

One of their co-accused allegedly discussed paying them $400,000 for the murder, the documents show.

But police allege the brothers did not fire the shot that killed McGurk.

Property developer Ron Medich was charged last year with McGurk’s murder and soliciting his murder.

Yesterday’s arrests bring to seven the number of people arrested over the slaying.

Nizar Samman wore a blue T-shirt, dark shorts and white socks in court today and did not express emotion during the brief proceedings.

He did not apply for bail, which was formally refused.

Ahmad Samman appeared in Bankstown Local Court yesterday charged with conspiracy to murder, several hours after he was arrested at a roadside workplace in Bankstown.

He also applied for bail, which was formally refused.

The seven co-accused will appear in Sydney’s Central Local Court on January 31.
