A former police officer says a far north Queensland murder mystery was not properly investigated because of concerns about how much it might cost.

In August 1991, Bill Hendrikse was one of the first police officers on the scene when friends Vicki Arnold and Julie-Anne Leahy were found dead near Atherton.

He told an inquest in Cairns that senior police declared it a murder-suicide within half an hour and two coroners later agreed.

Mr Hendrikse said the district inspector, Francis Wagner, told him at the time to keep quiet about his theory someone else killed the women.

He said he was told the police force would not spend money on the overtime necessary to investigate it.

Mr Wagner denied money was a factor during questioning yesterday.

The inquest continues.
