Canada holds forum on Persian art

The forum hosted Professor Shiraz Sheikh, an expert in Persian and Ottoman history, who traveled to Western Canada to enlighten colleagues and students on the richness of Persian heritage as expressed through miniatures.

“Persian miniature art linked itself very nicely to Islamic sentiment. Not just Persian art but Persian culture in general had a profound impact on Islamic civilization,” Shiraz Sheikh of York University told Press TV.

“We see echoes of Persian culture in practically every facet of Islamic civilization,” he added.

The event aimed to demonstrate the salient features of this form of art as well as its historical development in diverse regions of the Islamic world.

“Iran has some beautiful, beautiful historical pieces of architecture and art,” said Sheikh, adding, “It is not just Persian history and culture but it is human culture. It is part of the human experience.”

The students who attended the session found it very incisive and informative.

“I feel like doing things like that can help westerners gain an interest and want to know than what they just see in mass media,” one of the students told Press TV.

The Miniature Painting in Islamic Art was held at the Faculty of Art and Science of the University of Lethbridge on March 15, 2012.
