China asks Syrians to honor promises

“We hope the Syrian government and relevant parties in Syria will honor their commitments,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Wednesday.

His comment came one day after Damascus accepted the peace plan proposed by the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan.

The six-point plan aimed at ending the year-long unrest in the country.

Annan’s proposal includes a ceasefire, access for humanitarian aid agencies as well as political dialog between Damascus and the opposition.

Beijing also promised to continue support for Annan’s work.

“China will continue to actively coordinate with and support Mr. Annan’s mediation efforts and hopes the international community will create enabling conditions for that,” the spokesman said.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.
