China urges Syria parties to aid Annan

“We hope that all parties in Syria can cooperate with Mr. Annan’s mediation efforts in order to create conditions for the political settlement of the Syrian issue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a Tuesday press briefing.

The comments come during Annan’s visit to the Chinese capital, Beijing, to hold talks with Chinese leaders about his mediation efforts on Syrian crisis.

Hong also said Beijing is “willing to work with the international community to play a constructive and active role for the peaceful and proper resolution of the Syrian issue.”

The spokesman noted that his country is ready to support any “conducive” plan aimed at “easing of tensions in Syria, promoting political dialogue and dissolving disputes, as well as upholding peace and stability in the Middle East.”

Anna arrived at Beijing after a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in which the United Nations-Arab League envoy on Syria offered his proposal to the Kremlin.

Moscow also announced that it supports Annan’s peace mission.

China on Monday said that Beijing backs Annan’s efforts to help solve the Syrian crisis.

Russia and China oppose the Western pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The two permanent members of the UN Security Council have been calling for a negotiated solution to the unrest in Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March and many people, including security forces, have lost their lives in the violence.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters, but Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
