Cleric slams Arab leaders’ Syria stance

Egyptian Sufi leader Mohammad Alaa Al-Din Abul Azayem issued a statement on Monday, condemning the mounting pressure against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government as following the US-Israeli plots in Libya.

The propaganda war [staged] by the global Zionism, which always aims at portraying an upside-down image of news in connection with the Arab and the Muslim world, has severely attacked the Syrian president and is calling for the establishment of freedom and democracy in the country, the statement said.

Abul Azayem expressed surprise at threats made against Damascus by the Arab leaders in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, warning that the continuation of the status quo could do irreparable harm to the Syrian nation.

The remarks come in response to Doha’s move, backed by Saudi leaders along with the United States and its European allies, to send weaponry to anti-government forces in Syria.

The Arab kings and emirs have left the Syrian president with no other option than to announce that he is a Zionist, lest they might stop their attacks against him, the statement added.

Many people, including large numbers of security and army personnel, have been killed in Syria, which is grappling with a deadly unrest that has been plaguing the country since mid-March 2011.

On February 20, Assad accused “some foreign countries” of fueling the turmoil in Syria by “supporting and funding armed terrorist groups” fighting against the government.
