Concerns raised over Olympic ‘chaos’

In her report into the security issue surrounding the London Olympics, Labour MP Margaret Hodge, the chairman of the Commons Public Accounts Committee, said security preparations for the Olympic Games have undermined the public’s confidence in organizers.

“The chaos which has emerged over the security contract was predictable and undermines confidence in those responsible for managing the Games”, said Hodge.

After the British private security company G4S said it could not supply 10,400 forces for Olympics security, British Home Secretary Theresa May authorized the call-up of 3,500 extra military soldiers for Olympic security.

Moreover, the country’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) made urgent plans to deploy up to 2,000 more soldiers in case G4S would fail to deliver on its revised target of 7,000 security staff for the events.

“No credible explanation has been given for an astonishing 12-fold hike in management costs, from £10m to £125m, and G4S still has not been able to deliver. Now troops are having to be drafted in”, said Hodge.

British MPs’ concerns over security for the London Olympics come as jets and helicopters ready to shoot down planes flying over the Olympic Park, the British navy’s biggest warship being moored on the Thames, and missiles deployed on the rooftops of residential flats give you the feeling that London is more like a city preparing for war instead of an international peaceful event.
