A woman who was one of three people shot in an apparent murder-suicide in Tasmania’s north has been taken off the critical list but remains in a serious condition.

Police said a 46-year-old man shot the woman, 23, and another man, 31, before turning the gun on himself in the front yard of a house in Watkinson Street, Devonport, about 7.45am (AEDT) on Saturday.

Detective Inspector Rob Gunton said both men were dead when police arrived and the woman had gunshot wounds to her chest.

She was taken to the North West Regional Hospitals Burnie Division in a critical condition, before being transferred to Royal Hobart Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said the woman was in a serious but stable condition on Sunday.

Police confirmed the offender was an Ulverstone man, while the two victims were from Devonport.

Det Insp Gunton said it was unclear what had caused the shooting.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that one of the deceased males was the offender and he’s taken his own life after shooting the male and female outside the residence,” he said on Saturday.

He would not reveal if the people involved were related.
