A drunk driver put a police officer in a headlock after being stopped for speeding in northern NSW, it is alleged.
The 20-year-old man tried to run away when officers first approached his car on the Pacific Highway at Billinudgel, north of Byron Bay, on Saturday morning.
When that didn’t work, he allegedly grabbed one of the policemen in a headlock, before four more officers arrived and intervened.
Police said the driver later recorded a breath test reading of 0.218 – more than four times the legal alcohol limit.
He was charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, speeding and drink-driving.
He was held in custody and appeared at Lismore Local Court on Saturday.
