Correction: Assange says US is building case

Supporters of Julian Assange have taken to Twitter to protest a story ninemsn and other news outlets ran this morning claiming the Wikileaks founder had admitted there was no US indictment issued against him.

The headline on the story, “Assange admits there is no US indictment”, did not convey his message accurately.

Speaking to Radio National’s Fran Kelly, Assange acknowledged the United States had stated it would not seek his extradition, but claimed there was still a “hot, ongoing, active investigation” in the country and that subpoenas had been issued for witnesses to appear before a grand jury.

“Their careful statements reflect that the Department of Justice is not able to formally confirm or deny the existence of the grand jury — it’s a policy with all grand juries,” he said.

“But there are subpoenas everywhere, there are witnesses who have come out on public record.

“We have received subpoenas — the subpoenas mention my name. In the past month, two people have been detained at the US airport by US officials, interrogated by the FBI. They ask questions about me and my organisation, ask [them] to become informers.”

The Australian government has said there is no indication an indictment is pending.

Assange said US authorities were being “very careful with their words”, and claimed there was now a 48,135 page FBI file on him and WikiLeaks.

He said he was seeking asylum in Ecuador because he was not prepared to go to Sweden under the terms he believed he would be held there.

“The Swedes announced publicly that they would detain me, in prison, without charge while they continued their so-called investigation,” he said.
