IT was supposed to be a day of celebration – a family barbecue to mark her 28th birthday.

But Hanna Tahan yesterday spent her birthday in hospital, trying to come to terms with the car crash that killed her 57-year-old mother and two-year-old daughter.

On Wednesday night Ms Tahan, a mother of five, had just picked up her mother and was driving home with her three daughters when they collided with another vehicle as they merged lanes at Eastern Creek.

The impact caused their Toyota Prado to career left – straight into the back of a street-sweeper truck in the left lane of Wallgrove Rd.

Two-year-old Lulu, who was sitting in the back seat on the passenger side, was killed instantly, as was her grandmother Im who was in the front passenger seat.

The crash also left Ms Tahan’s daughter Aya, 3, in a critical condition and Nadine, 7, with spinal injuries.

Both were rushed to The Children’s Hospital, Westmead after being cut out of the crushed 4WD.

A family friend said she knew something was wrong when Ms Tahan failed to arrive home.

“When she didn’t get home we went looking for her and found her five minutes away from Rooty Hill, near where I live,” the friend said.”She is such a loving person. She always cares more about others than herself, especially her family. She loves her family so much. Her children are her life.”

Ms Tahan spent most of yesterday unaware one of her little girls was dead.

“I don’t know how she’s going to cope with losing a child and her mum at the same time,” the friend said.

“I know she’s going to blame herself for this and feel so guilty for the rest of her life.”

It is believed her car had only been on the road for five minutes before the accident occurred. Police said yesterday they did not believe speed or alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash.

“This is quite a simple crash … and should not have happened,” Assistant Police Commissioner John Hartley said. Both the driver of the street sweeper and the sedan’s 42-year-old driver provided blood and urine samples, which returned negative.

Family members of those involved in the accident last night raced to the scene in tears, slamming their heads on their cars and burying their faces in their hands in shock.

Officers had to hold many back as they attempted to get closer to their relatives.

Wallgrove Rd was closed for more than seven hours.

Police were last night still appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
