Emergency services rescue yacht off Byron Bay

A RESCUE operation is under way off Byron Bay after a yacht encountered difficulties in rough seas overnight.

Rescue 500 is attempting to wench a 70-year-old man and other crew from a yacht at Cape Byron after they called for help eight hours earlier, when they were more than 200km away, goldcoast.com.au reported.

The man set off EPIRB – an emergency device – near Coffs Harbour.

NSW Water Police were contacted about 12.20am regarding a yacht encountering rigging issues.

Some reports suggested the yacht had lost its mast and was taking on water but this has not been confirmed.

At 2.41am a Care Flight helicopter came on scene to assess the situation but did not have wenching capabilities.

A merchant ship was also called on scene but could not help because of the rough seas.

At 7am the vessel had reportedly drifted northeast where the Rescue 500 chopper was tasked to.

Emergency services are now attempting to wench the elderly man and any other crew onboard from off Cape Byron.
