The bad news from the eurozone is unrelenting. Unemployment is at a record high. Greece, paralysed by political uncertainty, is edging closer to the exit. Spain’s banks are teetering on the brink.

Yesterday, the billionaire investor George Soros warned there may be as little as three months left to take decisive action to save the single currency – or risk a devastating collapse.

Yet the deluded, self-aggrandising EU elite – currently seeking an unbelievable 6.8 per cent budget increase – think nothing of squandering your money on vanity projects which contribute zero to solving the ever-deepening crisis.

As a report by the Open Europe think-tank reveals, the EU’s bloated budget could be cut by £350million simply by scrapping its many pointless quangos.

Closing the European Parliament’s additional building in Strasbourg –  which is empty for 317 days a year and exists only as a sop to France – would claw back another £146million.

The list goes on, with Open Europe saying that, by slashing waste, and refocusing the EU budget on boosting jobs and growth, a total of £33billion could be saved. The tragedy, of course, is that there is no chance of the eurocrats listening to anybody but themselves.

History will not only damn the current generation of European politicians for being useless. It will also record their breathtaking arrogance.

They could not be in charge at a worse –    or more financially perilous – time.

Traitor in the midst

Coalition government – with its  shady, back-room deal-making, shoddy compromises and one-upmanship – is inevitably a grubby, unedifying affair.

But, by holding furtive talks with Labour about a ‘progressive alliance’ after the next election, Vince Cable has surely crossed the line into treachery.

Nick Clegg must rebuke the Business Secretary and tell him to focus on helping to drag Britain out of recession – a task the ‘socialist’, red-tape loving Mr Cable is failing so miserably to perform.

The last thing the Cabinet needs is a man who, perish the thought, is dreaming of one day propping up an Ed Miliband minority government.

Poor show from BBC

From the spectacular flotilla on the Thames, to last night’s pop concert  at Buckingham Palace, the Diamond  Jubilee has once again displayed Britain’s unrivalled brilliance for pageantry.

Sadly, however, our vast, massively resourced state broadcaster has itself fallen short of the rightful expectations of the licence fee-paying public.

Widespread criticism: One Show presenter Matt Baker with Sophie Raworth as they anchor the BBC’s coverage of the Queen’s Jubilee pageant

Complaints flooded in over the way the BBC failed to capture the majesty of the spectacle on the Thames, and instead offered us endless celebrity interviews, puerile stunts and trivia.

Inexplicably, the hosting of the event was left to light-entertainment ‘stars’ too ignorant to explain its historic significance – or get their facts right.

For all the Corporation’s pro-Labour, pro-EU, Left-wing bias, the nation  still instinctively turns to it for  state occasions.

The question is, if the BBC can no longer cover a Jubilee properly, just what is it for?

Get well soon, Sir

One of the most striking images on  Sunday was of the 90-year-old Duke of  Edinburgh, stood arrow straight by the Queen’s side, during the chilly, wet  four-hour river pageant.

What a great pity this most devoted of Royal consorts has been forced to miss the remainder of the celebrations. The Mail joins the entire country in praying for his speedy recovery.

No surprise there then! The leftie BBC has dumbed down so far it’s become laughable. It’s presenters are a joke and I for one object to paying for it when it wastes our money the way it does. The move oop north was the icing on the cake!

And the fiddling will continue by these Gravy Trainers. There is nothing to stop them as they are accountable to no-one. Out of touch, out of control and they should be out of our pockets. If the rest of Europe accepts this without question, we don’t have to. REFERENDUM NOW.

They cannot smell the smoke in their ivory towers.
Cameron bleats on trying to save it and he says he’s
a Europhobe. Who is he fooling?
