A former Tasmanian MP has been found guilty of having sex with a 12-year-old girl sold into prostitution.

A Supreme Court jury on Monday found former upper house MP Terence Lewis Martin guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse with a young person and producing child exploitation material.

It could not reach a verdict on a third charge of indecent assault.

Martin, 54, denied all three charges, saying he responded to an ad for adult sexual services in September 2009 and thought the girl was 18.

He was accused of performing oral sex on the girl at Claremont, north of Hobart, in September 2009.

He was also accused of paying the girl to perform oral sex on him, and of photographing the act.

The girl, who cannot be named, was prostituted to more than 100 men by her mother and her associate.

The two took a classified advertisement in Hobart’s Mercury newspaper, which described the girl as “Angela, 18, new in town”.

Martin has been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing submissions on Tuesday.
