Fabrice Muamba celebrated his 24th birthday in hospital yesterday after hearing that he could be moved from intensive care as early as next week.

Doctors at the London Chest Hospital have told the Bolton player that they’re pleased with his progress and he is likely to be moved to another ward.

And they could even decide to transfer him to a hospital closer to his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, when they review his case on Tuesday.

Muamba has made remarkable progress since suffering a cardiac arrest during Wanderers’ game against Tottenham last month.

Bolton’s manager Owen Coyle revealed on Thursday that Muamba was out of bed and able to walk around.

Muamba is expected to celebrate his birthday with a small gathering of family and friends, including fiancie Shauna Magunda, three-year-old son Josh and his father Marcel.

A steady stream of visitors has travelled to the capital from Bolton this week, including chairman Phil Gartside and club doctor Jonathan Tobin on Tuesday and club chaplain Phil Mason yesterday.

Gartside today tweeted: ‘Happy Birthday to Fabrice Muamba love from the Gartside family. Hope to see you back home soon. Your a star!!! X’

Among the celebrities to send their birthday greetings to Muamba were musician Lethal Bizzle and Everton player Tim Cahill.

Bolton defender Sam Ricketts believes that Muamba’s continued progress has been a big factor in the club’s recent upturn in form, which has seen them pull clear of the relegation zone.

‘When Fabrice started to get better there was just a new buoyancy around the place,’ he said.

‘It brought everybody together again because we see that he is making a remarkable recovery.’

A joint statement issued Bolton and the London Chest Hospital said the player was making ‘strong and steady’ improvements.

He has done some short periods of walking down the corridor he is in as part of the unit, staying in intensive care,’ Bolton boss Owen Coyle said.

‘He is taking steps, talking and has that big smile which we love to see, so he is certainly progressing the right way.’

He added: ‘My chairman Phil Gartside was there on Wednesday with our club doctor Jonathan Tobin, and our club chaplain Phil Mason will be there today to continue the support from the football club.

‘A couple of players have been sending him messages and we are keeping in touch. It has been great to see that smile and he continues to get better.

‘We have to stress that he still has a long way to go, but the improvement has been remarkable and long may that continue.’

This is lovely to read! 🙂

Best wishes to you Fabrice for a speedy recovery.

Jeez , you still can’t get it right. A cardiac arrest is not (as your homepage headline says) a heart attack.

Wayne Rooney has visited Fabrice Muamba in hospital.
“It’s great, he can almost string a sentence together,” said Fabrice

DON’T SO**ING CARE already.

Praying for a quick full recovery, and well done to every doctor and nurse that has treated him!

This is a great result and I hope more people take first aid courses

It’s so nice to read that Fabrice is on the mend after his unexpected heart-attack. It’s also very heartening to see the incredible support he’s received from his fellow players and others. The “others” including me, comprise those who can’t stand football but were anguished at Fabrice’s desperate plight. I wish him every well and hope that he recovers completely so that he can enjoy his life to the full again. He seems a very nice person.
