Fast food chain Chick-fil-A owners under fire for gay marriage stance

“They disrespect our fellow neighbours and residents.” The mayor of
Boston too said that he would block any attempt the restaurant made to open
a store in his city.

“You can’t have a business in the City of Boston that discriminates
against a population,” Thomas Menino told the Boston Globe. “We’re
an open city.

We’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion.” Most recently the Jim
Henson Company, which made Muppets toys for the company’s children’s meals
announced that it would no longer do so. The toy company said in a statement
that it would donate money it had received from Chick-fil-A to the Gay and
Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

However those criticising Chick-fil-A, especially the two mayors, have been
accused of discriminating against the company simply because it has a view
that they disagree with.

Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, called for a national
Chick-fil-A appreciation day upon which people attend the restaurant to show
support for its stance. The event is scheduled for Wednesday August 1, two
days before LGBT groups plan a kiss-in at the restaurants.

Mr Huckabee said in a statement: “Let’s affirm a business that operates
on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for
the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick-fil-A
on Wednesday, August 1.

“Too often, those on the left make corporate statements to show support
for same sex marriage, abortion, or profanity, but if Christians affirm
traditional values, we’re considered homophobic, fundamentalists,
hatemongers, and intolerant.” Mr Huckabee ‘s plan was supported by Rick
Santorum, the former Republican presidential candidate, who said: “No
signs and no protests are needed to make your voice heard. Just simply have
a meal at Chick-fil-A on August 1 for ‘Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day’ and our
support for traditional values will be heard loud and clear.”
