Police have described the bashing death of an elderly man on a train at Newcastle in the early hours of Friday as “cowardly”.

The 76-year-old boarded the train at Newcastle before it departed about 4:00am (AEST) on Friday.

He was found with severe head injuries about 30 minutes later after the Sydney-bound train made its sixth stop at Fassifern.

The man was rushed to John Hunter Hospital, but died of his injuries on Saturday night.

This morning police appealed for help to identify the man’s attacker.

Superintendent Craig Rae says it is one of the worst assaults he has seen during his 26 years in the New South Wales Police Force.

“I would describe it as a very violent and callous, if not perhaps the better word is cowardly, attack,” Superintendent Rae said.

He says police are keen to speak with anyone who was on the train.

“We believe that that service is quite well frequented. There are a number of commuters getting up at that time and getting on that train service to go to their work in Sydney,” he said.

Police have not formally identified the victim and are trying to track down his relatives.

They believe the man was homeless and regularly commuted between Sydney and Newcastle.

He is described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, 160 centimetres tall, of medium build, and balding.

He was wearing a dark grey jumper, dark pants and brown shoes.

Strike Force Ploughman has been set up to investigate his death.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
