Five people are dead and one woman is critically injured after a car crash in Penshurst in Victoria’s west.

Police say a truck burst into flames after it collided with a car this afternoon.

The truck driver and four people in the car were killed in the collision.

A 25 year old woman also in the car survived the crash and is being flown to a Melbourne hospital in a critical condition.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe says officers at the scene of the fiery crash are horrified by the deaths.

Deputy Commissioner Walshe says it is too early to determine what caused the accident

“The truck did burst into flames and the driver died as a result of that. The cause of the why the truck burst into flames, you know we’re just going to have to wait the investigation,” he said.

“It’s going to be a very painstaking and difficult and a very long investigation the major collision detectives are going to have to undertake.”

The crash is the second major accident on the nation’s road this weekend, after three people died when a car carrying nine people rolled in the Northern Territory on Friday night.
