Former NSW ministers to lose travel perks

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell will take away the rights of former ministers to air travel and the occasional use of a car and driver.

Under existing rules, former state ministers who aren’t in jail are entitled to four return economy air trips within NSW each year, which includes Canberra and Lord Howe Island.

But only days after stripping his Labor predecessor Kristina Keneally of perks enjoyed by other former premiers, Mr O’Farrell has extended the cost-cutting to former ministers, News Ltd reports.

This means they would lose the right to a car and driver on request in a metropolitan area for official functions.

The Stillbirth Foundation has criticised Mr O’Farrell for denying Ms Keneally a driver and a car to take her to its charity events.

The changes are mostly likely to affect former Labor ministers, following the party’s defeat at the March state elections after 16 years in power.
