A CAVE-DIVER with 10 years’ experience was found dead by his dive buddy on Sunday just 50 metres from the entrance of one of Australia’s longest underwater caves.

The 40-year-old from Melbourne was making his way back to the entrance of the 11 kilometre-long channel system of Tank Cave in South Australia. When his buddy surfaced and noticed his partner was not with him, he returned to the underwater labyrinth and found his body.

They had been part of a group of 12 divers visiting the cave near Mount Gambier, which claimed the life of world-renowned cave diver Agnes Milowka in February.

But the Cave Divers Association’s national director John Vanderleest said cave-diving was no more dangerous than any other sport. He said the diver’s death so close to the entrance was highly unusual and could have been due to an equipment failure, a medical problem or a deviation from protocol.
