Former Qld mayors make election comeback

Mayors and councillors who were casualties of Queensland’s controversial council amalgamations have been resurrected by Saturday’s local government elections.

Local Government Association of Queensland executive director Greg Hallam expects there to be 48 new mayors across 73 councils when results are finalised later this week.

But not all of them are council first-timers.

In the race for mayor of Bundaberg Regional Council, former Isis Shire mayor Bill Trevor, with 37.78 per cent of the vote, is ahead of former Bundaberg City deputy mayor Mal Forman by 0.54 per cent.

Incumbent Lorraine Pyefinch has just 21.93 per cent.

Former Millmerran Shire mayor Paul Antonio is on track to become mayor of the amalgamated Toowoomba Regional Council with 47.85 per cent of the vote.

In 2008 the then-Labor state government sparked outrage by merging 157 councils into 73, forcing out many councillors and mayors.

“Hopefully now this is truly a fresh start because amalgamations are now four years behind us and we’re in the next term of local government,” Mr Hallam told AAP.

The new Liberal National Party (LNP) state government has said it will examine the feasibility of letting councils such as Noosa and Port Douglas consider de-amalgamating.

While the Electoral Commission of Queensland is yet to declare winners, Mr Hallam says there are only about 10 councils too close to call.

In councils where party politics play a strong role, many of the results have mirrored last month’s state election.

Former premier Peter Beattie, who led the amalgamations, on Monday said he had known the contest for Brisbane City Council’s central ward would be tough for his wife Heather Beattie, who was unsuccessful.

“Labor was really in a very difficult spot and Heather came to the rescue of the party,” he told AAP.

“Now the party is in these dire straits, we’re going to need more people to have the courage and stand up.”
