Francis Maude risked further embarrassment for the Government last night after boasting that the Coalition wanted  to turn Britain into a  ‘tax haven’.

The embattled Cabinet Office minister said it would be a ‘compliment’ if Britain were seen as a place where foreigners or businesses paid little or no tax.

His remarks will undermine claims by the Prime Minister and the Chancellor that the Coalition is cracking down on tax avoidance.

It is the latest gaffe by Mr Maude, who faced calls to resign last week after creating panic by advising motorists to store fuel in jerry cans in case of a strike by tanker drivers.

The minister’s remarks led to petrol stations running dry as people stockpiled supplies and one woman was badly burnt after trying to decant fuel in her kitchen.

Speaking recently to a YouGov conference at Oxford University, Mr Maude recalled how a Labour MP had accused him of trying to turn Britain into a ‘tax haven’ 20 years ago. The Cabinet Office minister said: ‘To which my response was “Thank you very much, I appreciate the compliment”.

‘And that is exactly what we’re trying to do. We want Britain to be a place where people don’t mind being taxed – a good place to be taxed, where you can put your ideas to work, your money to work, build businesses, create wealth, create jobs. That is unequivocally a good thing.’

A tax haven is a country that offers foreign individuals and businesses little or no tax liability in a politically and economically stable environment.

Such havens also provide little or no financial information to foreign tax authorities and do not require individuals or businesses to live there to benefit from their policies.

Michael Dugher, the shadow Cabinet Office minister, said: ‘Francis Maude goes from bad to worse. At the same time as the Government is cutting tax credits for working families, he seems to be aspiring for Britain to become like the Cayman Islands, where the wealthiest can hide their money.’

Both David Cameron and George Osborne have called for a crackdown on large  companies that employ expensive accountants to avoid  paying tax.

In the Budget, Mr Osborne closed loopholes in the law to stop people using tax havens to avoid paying stamp duty when they sell multi-million-pound houses.

Nick Clegg and David Cameron both offered advice not to panic following the outcry with No 10 adding there was no need to queue

He used his Budget speech to attack ‘aggressive tax avoidance’, which he described as ‘morally repugnant’.

A spokesman for Mr Maude said: ‘It will surprise no one that the Conservatives support lower taxation.

‘It is a clear objective to make Britain the most competitive environment for business.

‘Our corporation tax reductions go a long way to achieving this.

‘Equally, we take tax evasion and aggressive tax avoidance very seriously and are clamping down on the loopholes that were created and exploited under the last government.’

Francis old chap, probably worth waiting until it’s your turn with the cabinet brain cell before spouting off

Over confident, multi-millionaire Maude, has admitted for the first time, what this bunch of Tory spivs had intended all along, and only the vanity of the hopeless Lib Dems under the disastrous leadership of ‘Jonah’ Clegg will enable this to continue happening.
If you care about the UK Clegg, it’s time to show some spine and get the Tories defeated by walking away from the coalition or you are history

They are history anyway!!!!!

Another irresponsible DM headline taken out of context! Are you trying to wind up the readers for whom the current period of austerity is mega challenging. Sorry, that’s not on.

What has an IQ of 144 ——————————–a gross of Tory MPs.

Here we go again. The pathetic, envious socialists and commies whingeing on about the rich and success. They are stuck in their dead-end jobs without the brains, skills and ambition to better themselves and expect the state to pander to all their excessive unearned demands. “Tax the rich” they all feebly whimper. “They just sit and their fat backsides and the money comes rolling in.” They became successful by hard graft, taking risks and believing in themselves. If you can’t beat them, join them.
– I say what I like and I like what I say, Yorkshire, 7/4/2012 0:24 They also of course have the judiciary on side – when a legitimate question on which island members of the establishment have opened up a ‘trust’ bank account – which is of course legitimate – the judiciary feels the need to assist by issuing bans on naming people involved in perfectly legitimate banking – nothing to do with tax evasion then?

So, what’s the problem? Is there really anything wrong with a low-tax, business friendly environment? I don’t think he’s out of touch at all. Business will follow, develop and thrive in environments where they have the least third-party interference, including taxation. That surely is an established fact. He may have chosen his words better, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the sentiment behind them.

Maude is one of the most out of touch politicians we have – keen to manipulate the truth to his own political advantage, or take advantage of ‘strikes’ that haven’t even been called (i.e. the jerry can fiasco). And he so aptly shows that ‘we’re all in this together’………………..just like Osborne and Cameron constantly do with their tax breaks for the rich.

The glass in his hand says it all.
