French steel workers protest job cuts

The workers have embarked on a ten-day march from eastern France to the capital Paris, arriving on Friday, in a bid to protest President Nikolas Sarkozy’s policies.

“This morning the main protesters reached Paris on foot. At the same time, 15 buses brought many protesters to Paris and many more have joined us from other parts of France. In some of the factories, there have been strikes since January,” says a protester.

The demonstrators started their march from the town of Florange in the industrial belt of Moselle province, approximately 350 kilometers from Paris.

The march started after a complete breakdown of talks between workers and the government which accused workers of exaggerating jobs losses.

The dispute also includes the Florange Steel factory which had been 100 percent owned by French companies, but later sold to steel giant Arcelor Mittal.

“We know that Arcelor Mittal got 56 million euros from the French state as financial aid. Yet, now it’s saying 5,000 jobs are on the line. President Sarkozy has given tax payers’ money as a gift to Arcelor Mittal, but this is not acceptable,” the protester concluded.

Experts say French steel factories have lost competition to their Chinese counterparts where labor costs are much lower, and jobs have been outsourced to more lucrative markets including Eastern Europe where more favorable tax laws exist.

In spite of numerous budget cuts already implemented by Sarkozy, many in France have said that they will opt for the Greek approach if more austerity is demanded.

In Greece, protests have raged on for months against the austerity measures adopted by the government and many of the demonstrations have turned violent.

The push for more austerity comes in light of Sarkozy’s announcement earlier this month that he will seek a second term in office during the upcoming April-May presidential election.
