Furniture industry slams forest activist

Updated: 08:59, Sunday October 9, 2011

The forest activists who scaled the Sydney Opera House should be ashamed for misleading the public, a furniture industry group says.

Rohan Wright, chief executive of Furniture Australia (Vic/Tas), said the environmental group The Last Stand should ‘be ashamed of the misinformation they use to mislead their supporters and bully Australian retailers’.

‘There simply are no plantation timbers available in Australia in commercialquantities, that can replace the native timbers Australian furniture manufacturers use,’ the group said in a statement on Saturday.

‘Australian furniture makers are reliant on high-end Australian native timber to produce quality Australian furniture.’

Mr Wright said the protesters are campaigning to shut down 40 per cent of the Australian furniture industry with thousands of jobs at stake.

‘Harvey Norman should be congratulated for standing up for the Australian furnishing industry that currently provides more than 100,000 Australian jobs,’ he said.

‘We know that Harvey Norman insist that their Australian manufactured furniture is made from timber certified as sustainable by either the Australian Forestry Standard or FSC.

‘These standards guarantee no deforestation, and sustainable management.’

Four forest activists have been arrested after they scaled the Sydney Opera House and unfurled a protest banner on Saturday morning.
