Cost: Holidaymakers face huge charges on their suitcases

Families travelling on holiday this summer are being warned they will  face increased hidden charges on every suitcase they bring.

Some 3.8 million are predicted to be hit by the charges this year – with budget airlines hitting passengers with children who will need extra bags the hardest.

Airlines operate different baggage allowances, which has turned booking flights into a lottery for passengers who have to pay extra.

In the past year Ryanair has increased its charges on a 20kg bag from up to £30 to up to £40 – a 33 per cent increase.

Meanwhile, easyJet has increased its luggage charge on the same weight suitcase from £11 to £14.50 – a 31 per cent increase.

However, Aer Lingus has enjoyed the biggest increase on 20kg bags from £12 to £18 – a percentage increase of 50 per cent.

Ryanair boasts about its low fares, however it is one of the most expensive of all the airlines in terms of baggage fees.

Jet2 has raised the maximum charge for hold luggage from £15.99 to £24.99.

Even though surcharges for paying by credit and debit cards will be outlawed later this year, airlines have hiked up costs within the past month and have even renamed charges.

Easyjet is now referring to the charge as an ‘admin fee’ which has jumped from £5.50 to £9 per booking.

Last year it would have cost you £5 to book with Ryanair, whereas this year it is £6.

BMI Baby booking fee has jumped up 50p from £3 to £3.50.

Bob Atkinson, of travelsupermarket.com which carried out the research, told The Sun: ‘Airlines are always looking for ways to squeeze extra pounds from travellers.

‘You must bear in mind add-on fees when booking.’

i just booked two flights with ryan air, the total charges for 1 x 20k bag, online check in and admin fees etc. total €37, one flight from paris, second from madrid, both obviously outside of the u.k. but, in europe, so how does this work, well its quite simple really, other countries did something about this, so dont moan about the airlines, ask your government to do the same, they know all about excessive add ons, dont mention the pasties.

My partner and I go abroad at least twice a year, when we get to check in we always get asked do you want to sit together? we always say, it doesn’t matter where we sit but they always put us next to each other, I don’t think they know what to make of us lol

People who choose to travel by budget/low cost airlines must face reality. These airlines are in it to make money, as much as they can – even by underhanded/surreptious means They are NOT charities and their sole aim is to make huge profits. Therefore, if you choose to use such airlines, be prepared for and accept all the inconveniences, hassle and additional costs/charges.

I love these muppets complaining about the low cost sector’s extra charges– maybe if you learn to read then you will know EXACTLY how much you are pay then the choice is YOURS if you want to fly with them or not

i never can understand the amount of people who bring their labtop on holidays and all the hassle at security etc,tis easier go by ferry to the uk,..,
the security searching is a right pput off,,.
just take sleeping tablets on long flights,.

I’m a regular flyer and use both long haul and low cost airlines. You have to be a fool or ill informed to compare EasyJet or Jet2 with BA, Singapore Airlines or Virgin Atlantic. Doh ! You try getting a Ryanair flight to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. I use them all. Ignore the way the low cost airlines try to extract cash from your pocket, just look at the bottom line and ask yourself if it is worth it to fly with these airlines. Then compare the low cost airline price with that of BA or KLM, as the legacy airlines are not as cheap as some claim. If you are footing the bill you will seriously consider EasyJet or Ryanair and put up with all the ‘extras’ nonsense. And to those bashing air travel… it contributes 8% to the economy and only 2% in terms of pollution. If you want to bash travel, have a go at cars and lorries ! Get freight on the rails !

Cheer yourselves up by going on YouTube and watching Fascinating Aida’s wonderful song, “Cheap Flights”

Hmmmm…….The unregulated free market economy at work once again !

What hidden charges? Before you click the PURCHASE button you will know the total cost. BTW I bought a round trip from Toronto to LHR for an enticingly low fare of $340 on a major carrier. The total Price??? $970. They added 630 $$$ of fuel surcharge and taxes and fees. So they didn’t charge for using a credit card. But they charged me plenty. 2 years agi I flew from London to Dublin, return, on a low cost carrier for an actual total cost of just 20 pounds.

Jet2 sounded cheap, until all the add ons. I am very annoyed. Why doesn’t the law stop this greed?

Dear Barbara, it was YOU who CHOSE to use this company! The law did not get involved then, and should not now. If you dislike being ripped off by greed, use your brain and do not buy a ticket with them. To quote a rodent – Seemples
