Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have stationed tanks near his compound in central Tripoli and are resisting rebel attacks as world leaders called on him to quit.
Amid the gunfire there were rumours Gaddafi may have fled the country, although dilpomats believe it’s most likely he’s still holed up in his compound.
While there was no confirmation of Gaddafi’s whereabouts, at least two of his sons had been detained.
But there was still heavy fighting Libya’s capital as government tanks emerged from Gadaffi’s complex and opened fire.
A rebel official in Tripoli, who gave his name as Abdulrahman, said: ‘The situation is not stable. There is gunfire everywhere. Gaddafi’s forces are using tanks at the port and Al Sarine street near (Gaddafi’s compound at) Bab al-Aziziyah,’
