Galloway wins seat despite PressTV ban

George Galloway, representing Respect Party, won a landslide victory in the parliamentary by-election in Bradford West, which is not his original constituency, getting 18,000 votes, around 10,000 more than the dejected Labor candidate.

This is while George Galloway had failed to garner votes in his own constituency.

Some supporters contacted Press TV, as a major force behind Galloway’s election win, hoping the same would happen to the British politician, Ken Livingstone, who is running for the post of Mayor of London. Livingstone has been recently under fire from British media for his regular cooperation with Press TV.

Others proposed that another Press TV host, Lauren Booth, should be encouraged to run for the parliament and become the first Muslim woman wearing hijab to enter the British legislative body.

Earlier this year, Ofcom revoked Press TV’s broadcasting license in the UK and finally removed the channel from the Sky platform in a questionable move without offering a valid response to the letters of Press TV’s CEO.

In his last letter to Ofcom in January, Press TV CEO Mohammad Sarafraz questioned the independence of the British regulatory body given that the British Secretary of State has the power to appoint or remove from office Ofcom’s chairman and its members, and even to dissolve the entire organization.

Sarafraz further pointed to Ofcom’s “glaring contradiction” in its dealings with Press TV, saying “Ofcom wants to revoke the broadcast license because it has determined that Press TV Ltd. does not have control over the broadcast. Yet at the same time, Ofcom sentences Press TV Ltd. to pay a financial penalty for the broadcast of something Ofcom says it has no control over! How can you possibly explain your paradoxical policy?”

“It is futile to attempt to conceal the truth from the people of Britain, and those that want to hear our alternative voice will find a way despite your efforts,” he concluded.

Ofcom did not answer the Press TV CEO’s last letter as there was no way it could justify its paradoxical and contradictory behavior.
