Games vital to economy: Fraser

The Commonwealth Games will be vital to the economic future of the Gold Coast, Acting Queensland Premier Andrew Fraser has said.

A day after the city won the right to host the 2018 Games, Mr Fraser told reporters: “It is utterly important to the economic future of the Gold Coast.

“Crime over the decade is well down on the Gold Coast and the community spirit there was one of the great advantages of the bid.”

Mr Fraser, who was speaking in Brisbane, would not be drawn be on the program but said the upgrade of the Aquatic Centre in Southport would be one of the most significant developments.

“It will be a signature sight of the Commonwealth Games, of people swimming up and down the pool by the beach. It will be something replayed round the world in decades to come,” he said.

The president of the Australian Olympic Committee, John Coates, said the win would encourage younger children to participate in sport.

“The Gold Coast Bid Committee, Queensland Government and the Australian Commonwealth Games Association have done an excellent job and the result is very important to Australian sport and our country,” he said in a statement.

“The 2018 Commonwealth Games will showcase the Queensland coast but it will also encourage young children to participate in sport after watching their role models compete”.
