Girl, 14, flips car after high-speed chase

A 14-year-old girl allegedly failed to stop for a random breath test and led officers on a high-speed car chase before crashing and rolling a car in western Sydney this morning, police say.

The teenager, from Riverstone in Sydney’s west, was reported missing by her family more than a week ago, Chief Inspector Wayne McMahon from Mount Druitt Local Area Command said.

The girl was allegedly driving a Nissan Pintara on Luxford Road, Whalan, between Gasmata Crescent and Belmore Avenue when officers tried to stop her for a breath test about 3am.

She did not stop and sped off, reaching speeds to up to 120km/h in 60km/h zones as the officers chased her, police said.

A short while later, the car mounted a median strip and rolled a few times.

Police helped the girl from the car. She was not believed to have been hurt but was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

She was in a stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Chief Inspector McMahon said the girl was very lucky to have walked away from the car.

“How you can roll a car at 100km/h and get out without a scratch … she’s got the luck of nine lives and then some,” he said.

Chief Inspector McMahon said the car was not stolen but was lent to an unknown friend by a Fairfield man a week ago.

The man was surprised to find out from police today that it had ended up with the girl, Chief Inspector McMahon said.

Police said they had not spoken to the girl, but expected to charge her with dangerous driving, driving while unlicensed and Skye’s Law – failing to stop while being pursued by police.
