The principal of a Catholic secondary college where a teenage girl was stabbed this morning has told of how screams alerted the teachers to what had happened and they performed CPR on the victim until ambulance officers arrived.

Some students at St Columban’s College in Caboolture witnessed a 14-year-old girl be stabbed in the head, neck, back and forearms in the schoolgrounds, according to police.

Principal Ann Rebgetz said the girl was at the school early for sports training when she was stabbed about 7am.

A 16-year-old boy, who is also a student at the school, voluntarily walked into Caboolture police station earlier today to assist police with the investigation.

Ms Rebgetz said the girl was stabbed near toilet block and teachers were alerted to the assault by screams and began to perform CPR straight away until ambulance officers arrived.

The victim was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.

An RBWH spokeswoman said the 14-year-old was released from hospital this afternoon.

Ms Rebgetz said the school was placed into lockdown immediately after the stabbing and would shut for the rest of the day, with students sent home.

‘‘I just want to say that we are providing counselling support to the students, to the families, and at school today we have asked students to go back home and stay at home today because it is a crime scene at the moment but as for tomorrow, it will very much school as normal,’’ she said.

Mr Rebgetz said there was no history of violence on the campus, describing the stabbing as an ‘‘isolated incident’’.

‘‘There were quite a lot of adults around but this has happened as an isolated incident around the toilets so we’re really not sure of the exact details at the moment,’’ she said.

‘‘…The other students were obviously quite distressed when it was apparent what had happened but they were very supportive and acted very wisely as did the other staff.’’

Acting Inspector David Crawford-Raby said a knife had been found by police in the grounds of the college soon after the school was placed into lockdown.

‘‘The actual motive and the reasons for the incident happening haven’t been established,’’ Inspector Crawford-Raby said.

‘‘And that’s actually subject to the investigation which is under way.’’

One senior student at the school said it was a frightening incident.

“All buses are being directed to go back to their bus stops to drop all the passengers off,” he told ABC 612 Brisbane.

‘‘And anyone that definitely can’t get home is being secured in the school chapel.’’

A crime scene has been established at the school.

Liberal MP Wyatt Roy, who recently visited the school in his electorate of Longman, has passed on his deepest sympathy.

“This is obviously a very dark, difficult day for the school community and for the community at large,’’ he said in federal parliament today.

‘‘Our thoughts are with her family, with her friends and with the school.’’

Worried parents took to social networks to express their concern about the stabbing, with most questioning how this could happen in a place such as a school.

“Very scary morning, when my daughters are sent home from school because a student had been stabbed in the toilets. [name removed] is so upset she is friends with the girl … Hope the poor girl is ok my thoughts and prayers are with her family,” one mother posted on her Facebook page.
