Gold Coast detectives hunt hotel gang

Detectives are hunting an armed gang which has targeted ATMs and safes in a spate of violent break-ins at hotels across southeast Queensland.

Serious and violent crime squad officers say the gang of six carried firearms during the raids across the Gold Coast, Coomera and Logan between March 4 and 20.

Security camera footage shows a man carrying a rifle painted in camouflage colours with a telescopic sight.

The late night raids were made mostly on pubs and licensed clubs.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Bristow says the gang uses a heavy-duty concrete cutting saw to slice open ATMs and safes to get at the cash.

“The major concern … is an offender who appears to approach the premises first carrying what looks like a rifle, and maintains a position outside while (the robberies) are committed inside,” Det Sgt Bristow told reporters.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever seen anybody use a concrete cutter … they’re very prolific with sometimes two or more offences on one night.”

Det Sgt Bristow refused to say how much the gang had stolen.

Asked if the concrete cutting saw had helped them he replied: “It hasn’t hurt”.
