Thanks to the hype created by conservative and alternative media, guns sales for Christmas saw a huge upward rise of 24% over 2014. On Black Friday alone, the Federal Bureau of Investigations processed 185,345 background checks for firearms.
However this gun manufacturers dream has turned into a deadly nightmare for nearly 30 Americans who were killed on Christmas Day because of guns.
According to Gun Violence Archive (GVA), 27 people were killed and 63 injured on Christmas Day in 2015. This number does not include those who committed suicide using a gun.
To understand the impact of the 27 people who died in America on Christmas is equal to the total number of gun-related homicides for the entirety of shootings that occurred in 8 nations combined.

Among the dead includes:
• A man and woman shot during a robbery in Columbus, Ohio
• A Texas wife who shot her husband over infidelity
Shockingly, 2 of the shooting incidents qualify as mass shootings because 4 or more people were killed. One of these incidents involved the injury of a 2 year old girl and 3 teenagers in Jacksonville, Florida; the other involved 4 teenagers shot at a movie theater in Mobile, Alabama.
GVA points out that 2015 has averaged 36 gun fatalities and 73 gun-related injuries per day, totally 13,140 gun-related deaths and 26,645 injuries for the entire year.
Journalist Heny A. Giroux pointed to America’s love affair with guns and violence as the fuel that creates the bigger problem.
Giroux wrote : “Violence runs through American society like an electric current offering instant pleasure from all sources of the culture, whether it be the nightly news and Hollywood fanfare or television series that glorify serial killers.”
This extends to policymaking with the influence of the National Rifle Association (NRA) which “drives [the] arms industry, a militaristic foreign policy, and is increasingly the punishing state’s major tool to enforce its hyped-up brand of domestic terrorism, especially against Black youth.”
And thanks to a 2015 study produced by the Harvard University’s Injury Control Research Center, “firearm suicide rates are higher in states with higher rates of gun ownership, underscoring the relationship between the availability of guns and firearm suicides.”
Making matters worse, the Harvard study confirmed that 40% of gun owners purchased their last firearm without a background check.
To compound the problem, gun stores like Badger Guns are responsible for allowing strawman purchases which results in more guns being sold to people who would not otherwise be able to obtain a firearm.
Badger Guns was responsible for 537 guns being sold to straw-buyers who lied on their background check forms. The employees of Badger Guns looked over clues that would have indicated a strawman purchase was being attempted such as 2 people looking to buy one gun, and those shoppers wanting the cheapest gun available.
Mass shootings are helped by gun stores because of the allowance of “default proceed” sales which are at the discretion of the gun store owner. This type of sale can go through regardless of whether or not the buyer is legally eligible to possess a firearm.
In other words, a person can purchase a gun and have it in their possession before the background check is concluded.
