Award-winning Colorado renewable energy authors and educators Dan Bartmann and Dan Fink will be teaching a series of intensive, hands-on wind power classes for home and business owners from April 30 through May 10, 2012 in Chadron, Nebraska.

“Wind is the least understood and most difficult renewable resource to harvest,” said instructor Dan Fink. “It pays to learn the basics before making any kind of investment in a small wind turbine.” Over the course of 11 days, this series of three classes will give students an intensive, hands-on renewable energy “boot camp” with a focus on wind power.

During the class “Wind Turbine Design and Construction – Homebrew Wind Power” from April 30 to May 5, students will build a 12-foot diameter, 1.5 kilowatt wind turbine from scratch, starting with only steel, pipe, wire, wood and magnets. Fabrication skills such as metal and wood working, welding, blade carving, and alternator construction are taught hands-on, and classroom sessions cover all aspects of wind turbine design and theory in depth.

Over the next three days of “Wind Turbine Towers and Installation,” May 6 – 8, students will install and wire the turbine built by students during Homebrew Wind Power on a 100-foot tilt-up tower, and raise it. Installation and programming of the controllers will be included, and integration of the new wind turbine with an existing wind turbine and solar arrays. Classroom time covers tower types and foundations, tower safety, relations with neighbors and local government, and all the other equipment needed when putting together a working wind power system, including integrating it with solar.

The last class on May 9 – 10, “Introduction to Off-Grid Power Systems,” gives students a sound, detailed foundation in designing and installing off-grid power systems, including solar, wind, hydro, battery storage and backup generation. Students will tour existing installations in the area, and perform critical inspection and maintenance tasks hands-on.

All classes are accredited by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) and the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), and students who successfully complete them are eligible for continuing education credit hours approved by these organizations.

Instructors Dan Bartmann and Dan Fink have been teaching wind power classes in the USA and worldwide since 2004, and are co-authors of the award-winning book “Homebrew Wind Power.” Dan Fink is a frequent author and “Ask the Experts” columnist for Home Power Magazine, Solar Professional Magazine, and numerous other renewable energy periodicals.
