Victorians and South Australians are bracing for another high fire danger day today, after both states sweltered through soaring temperatures yesterday.

Temperatures topped 43 degrees in some parts of Victoria, including at Warrnambool and Port Fairy in the south-west, on Monday.

The weather bureau’s James Taylor says there is only slight relief today.

“There should be some bayside sea breezes, which will extend inland later in the day, so maximum temperature for Melbourne [will be] about 35 degrees, a fairly sticky 24 degrees for a minimum; some of the outer suburbs might get up to 36, 37 degrees though,” he said.

It will also be very hot in parts of South Australia, with the weather bureau predicting temperatures will hit the low 40s in parts of the north and east of the state.

The mercury is tipped to reach 37 degrees in Adelaide, and there are total fire bans in four regions.

A cool change is predicted to bring some thunderstorms today, but not until the afternoon.

Bushfire warning

With temperatures continuing to rise, fire authorities have warned of the growing risk of bushfires in both states.

Fire warnings are in place in South Australia for the North West pastoral, North East pastoral, Flinders and the Riverland districts.

In Victoria, there is a total fire ban for the northern country fire district today.

More than 100 blazes broke out across Victoria on Monday, many of them in grassland in the state’s west.

Further east, a bushfire south of Rosedale was contained this evening after several hours of water-bombing.

Fire authorities say holiday-makers must remain vigilant today.

The Country Fire Authority’s Steven Warrington says the fire danger is not yet over for Victoria.

“For the outlook period tomorrow evening, our concerns would be for right across the state, particularly in the west of the state,” he said.

In South Australia, electricity was cut to about 3,000 South Coast homes and businesses yesterday because of hot weather and dangerous winds.

Power was restored once conditions eased.
