A NURSE whose husband died after a firework exploded in his face at a New Year’s Eve party desperately performed first aid immediately after the horrific accident.

Father of two Carlos Rodriguez, 34, died in The Alfred hospital on Sunday night, the Herald Sun reported.

Mr Rodriguez was holding a New Year’s Eve party at his Tarneit home. He was playing with a firecracker with his brother when one exploded in his face just after midnight. The projectile hit him in the eyes.

His uncle, Luis Barrigos, said Mr Rodriguez was a loving father to daughter Alicia, 5, and son, Michael, 4, and a keen Real Madrid soccer fan.

He said Mr Rodriguez’s wife Kim was devastated.

“She is a nurse by trade. She actually applied first aid. She knew that he was gone. She told us yesterday that she knew when she applied first aid,” Mr Barrigos said.

“(He was) a wonderful family man, father, nephew. He was everything you could think of in a person.”

Paramedics arrived to find Mr Rodriguez unconscious and suffering significant head injuries.

He was put into a coma and taken to The Alfred in a critical condition.

Mr Barrigos said he hoped the truck driver’s death was a warning to others not to use fireworks, which are illegal in Victoria without a permit or licence.

“It was just a horrible, horrible accident. The two of them were playing with fireworks and it went horribly wrong,” he said.

“The first one misfired and before they could even decide not to light any more up my nephew lit one up and just blew in his face.

“Just think of the consequences of playing with fireworks. They are illegal for a reason and people should take that into account.”

He said he thought police should chase people selling illegal fireworks more vigorously and increase the number of raids on places where they were sold.

“I hope they throw the book at them,” he said.

He said he didn’t know if Mr Rodriguez had used fireworks before.

Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said police believed most fireworks came from the ACT and Northern Territory.
