POLICE have corrected their statement this morning saying a swimmer had died after being hit by a jet ski in Port Melbourne last night.

They say the man is on life support awaiting the arrival of a family member from overseas.

Life support is expected to be formally switched off later today.

Police had been told the 51-year-old Port Melbourne man was swimming around Lagoon Pier, Port Melbourne, at 5.50pm last night when he was hit by two men riding a jet ski.

The man suffered serious head injuries and was placed in an induced coma before being taken to The Alfred hospital, where he remains on life support.

Police earlier reported incorrectly that the man had died.

The driver of the jet ski, a 21-year-old Roxburgh Park man, has been released by police pending further inquires.

Water Police investigators are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in the water at the time of the incident, particularly those who might have been in any nearby boats.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or have information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
