A YOUNG woman is recovering in hospital after being bitten on the leg by a crocodile while swimming off a luxury boat in the Kimberley.

A fellow crewman is believed to have pulled Tara Hawkes to safety as she was being attacked just metres from the cruise ship True North.

The man, known as “Big Al” dived onto the crocodile and with the help of another passenger prised the crocodile’s jaws off Ms Hawkes and then pulled her from the water back onto the boat.

Ms Hawkes, 23, formerly of Busselton, was swimming in a freshwater pool near the tourist vessel in Dugong Bay north of Derby on Sunday afternoon when a two-metre crocodile bit her upper leg as she left the water.

Ms Hawkes, who was a crew member on the boat, was flown by helicopter to Derby Hospital where she was in a stable condition last night being treated for lacerations and puncture wounds.

A Derby hospital spokesman confirmed Ms Hawkes would be flown to Perth some time today for further treatment.

He said the 23-year-old was in a stable condition and was in “good spirits.”

Peter Trembath of North Star Cruises, the vessel’s operator, said today he could not comment further on the incident but added: “Tara is fine, her injuries were not serious to begin with.”

A Royal Flying Doctor Service spokeswoman said she understood Ms Hawkes may be flying into Perth on a commercial flight later today.

“We don’t have anything tasked so from what it sounds like she might be going commercially,” the spokeswoman said.

“It sounds like her injuries are not that severe in which case they very often do send them (to Perth) commercially.”

Mr Trembath said crew members had checked the shallow pool and believed it was safe to swim in.

“Crew members checked the pool before entering the water, however they did not detect the crocodile which was estimated to be two metres in length,” Mr Trembath said.

He said Ms Hawkes was bitten while getting out of the water.

A Department of Environment and Conservation spokesman told AAP the department had put out a warning to tourist operators not to let people swim in the area because it was believed the crocodile was still there.

He said it was not known if the animal was a freshwater or a saltwater crocodile but the attack took place in fresh water.

He said freshwater crocodiles would usually attack only if people seriously disturbed them.

A wildlife officer was on the way to the scene of the attack and the department says it is assessing options to deal with the crocodile.

Dugong Bay is south of Talbot Bay, near Horizontal Falls, off Derby, 2500km north of Perth.

True North,  which can carry 36 passengers and has 20 staff, was purpose-built to access remote wilderness areas. It was the cruise ship used by American model Jerry Hall and her Perth-based boyfriend Warwick Hemsley on a recent trip to the Kimberley.

Ms Hawkes posted pictures of True North on her Facebook page, above.

Passengers pay thousands a day for a berth – a seven-night Kimberley adventure costs $9000-$14,000 a person.

The ship is due to take passengers from Wyndham to the King George Falls this weekend.
