Hundreds attend jubilee service in Sydney

Opposition leader Tony Abbott and NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell have celebrated the reign of Queen Elizabeth at a special Diamond Jubilee service at Sydney’s St Andrew’s Cathedral.

The 800-capacity cathedral was nearly full despite the rather British weather. The sound of rain on the roof competed with God Save the Queen, led by the St Andrew’s boys choir.

From the pulpit, Sydney Dean Phillip Jensen called for Christians to stand behind the Queen. Mr Abbott, Mr O’Farrell and Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury read from the Bible.

Mr Jensen said Mr Abbott was proof Australia’s constitutional monarchy was working, as he was able to lead an opposition party without fear of banishment, imprisonment or assassination.

“We give a politician more honour and more pay to lead opposition to our government,” he said.

“We don’t imprison, banish, expel or assassinate him, but we honour him as the leader of Her Majesty’s loyal Opposition.

“That is true civilisation – not that I think he wishes to stay in the position.”

After the service the national convenor of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, David Flint, said the turnout showed support for the royal family was growing.

“Although I don’t say the republic is dead, I say it is comatose,” Professor Flint said.

His organisation’s polling has found support for a “politicians’ republic” had fallen since it was put to a referendum more than a decade ago.

“I think (support for the monarchy) is stronger than it was in 1999,” he said.

A mixed group attended the service, including seniors and young families.

Suzanne Newton brought her husband and three children along to honour the Queen.

“I felt that the Queen has been somebody that has upheld her duty and she has been committed to those vows that she took. I think very few people can say that, especially our leaders,” she told AAP.

“I think, for my children, the Queen has modelled in her life what it is to be Christian.”
