Immigration minister defends mandatory detention of refugees

Pressure is building on the Australian Government to release asylum seekers from detention more quickly.

It follows the apparent suicide of a Sri Lankan man in an immigration detention centre in Sydney.

The 27-year-old Tamil had been accepted as a refugee but remained in detention waiting for final clearance from Australia’s domestic security agency, ASIO.
