Indonesia finds 50 bodies after ship sinks

Rescuers have found more than 50 bodies in waters off Indonesia, days after a ship packed with asylum seekers sank in stormy weather. More than 150 others are missing and feared dead.

The heavily overloaded vessel – with about 250 men, women and children fleeing economic and political hardship in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan – was carrying twice its capacity when it was slammed by a towering wave.

Survivors said they were trying to reach Australia.

Sutrisno, a rescue official involved in the search, said navy warships spotted bloated bodies in the water near Banyuwangi, an island 300km from where the ship sank.

He said officials, aided by fisherman, were pulling them from the water on Wednesday.

Only 49 people were rescued after Saturday’s accident.
