Iran nominates Baniasadi for 2013 ALMA

Following a decision by the CBC and the planning and executive council of Children and Young Adults Literature, Baniasadi was shortlisted as the nominee for the prestigious award presented annually by the Swedish government.

The 57-year-old illustrator, graphic designer and painter has so far designed 80 books for children, and received several national and international awards for his outstanding career.

Baniasadi was also shortlisted for the 2012 Hans Christian Andersen Award, and was later among the last five nominees to receive the prize.

Earlier in June, Iran’s Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults also nominated two other Iranian candidates for the Swedish award. Ahmad Reza Ahmadi, poet and writer of children’s story, and Farshid Mesqali, illustrator and graphic designer were shortlisted as Iranian candidates of the award.

The award, worth 5 million Swedish Kronors (USD 730,000), is the world’s largest prize for children and young adult literature. It is granted to writers, illustrators, narrators and/or promoters of reading whose works reflect the spirit of Astrid Lindgren.

The award was established in 2002 in honor of Swedish writer of children’s books Astrid Lindgren. It is funded solely by the central government funds and is administered by the Swedish Arts Council.

Dutch author Guus Kuijer received the 2012 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
