Iraqi death toll increases in May

Figures by the Iraqi ministries of interior, defense and health indicated on Saturday that a total of 132 people were killed by attacks across the country in May, including 90 civilians and 42 security forces members.

The latest death toll is up from 126 deaths in April and 112 in March — the lowest monthly death toll since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The bloodiest incident in May occurred on May 31, when a series of bombing attacks in the capital Baghdad killed at least 18 people and wounded some 55 others.

Explosions and shootings take place across the country on a daily basis, often targeting Shia-majority areas and local security forces.

Violence has been on the rise since the beginning of this year when the Iraqi government issued an arrest warrant for fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi.

Hashemi is accused of running a terror hit squad that targeted authorities and Shia pilgrims.
