The row over Commons Speaker John Bercow’s alleged anti-Tory bias reignited last night with detailed new research claiming he ‘massively’ favours Labour.
Mr Bercow was accused of giving Ed Miliband’s party an advantage over the Coalition with his pro-Labour application of Commons procedure.
The report by Tory MP Rob Wilson claims the number of ‘Urgent Questions’ granted by the Speaker is ‘massively in Labour’s favour’, with Mr Bercow twice as likely to force Coalition Ministers to answer such questions as he was with Labour Ministers in Gordon Brown’s Government.
Row: John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons, has been accused of showing anti-Tory bias
Mr Wilson’s report, the latest in a series of reviews by the MP on the Speaker’s performance, also claims Mr Bercow is still more likely to shout ‘order’ at Conservative MPs than those of other parties – echoing a widespread complaint on the Government benches.
Mr Wilson, MP for Reading East, accuses Mr Bercow of being ‘more agitated, forceful, patronising and lecturing’ towards Tories. He contrasts this with the ‘calmness and strict neutrality’ shown by previous Speakers, including Betty Boothroyd.
Accusation: Rob Wilson’s report found Mr Bercow was more likely to shout ‘order’ at Conservative MPs
Mr Bercow – a former Tory who was elected Speaker in June 2009 with the backing of many Labour MPs – has been involved in a series of bad-tempered spats with Health Minister Simon Burns, while his relations with Education Secretary Michael Gove also appear strained in the Commons.
Mr Wilson said: ‘It is believed Urgent Questions have become an instrument to bash the Government. Some colleagues feel this is an example of the Speaker making things more awkward for one Government as opposed to another.’
Last night, a spokesman for Mr Bercow insisted the Speaker acted impartially in the Chamber. ‘Keeping order is not a statistical exercise,’ he said. ‘It is dealing with specific situations as they arise to ensure that Ministers and backbenchers can be heard.’
A spokesman for the House of Commons said: ‘Urgent Questions are an important parliamentary tool to hold Ministers to account.
‘They are selected based on urgency and degree of public importance, not party of origin. Opposition parties are more likely to use Urgent Questions, given the nature of their role in the House.’

Report written by Tory MP complaining about bias against Tory MPs? Hmmm….? The words ‘gather dust’ and ‘bin’ come to mind.

Typical right wing, can’t tolerate anyone pointing out when they’re in the wrong – which, as events are currently showing, is most of the time. Did Mr Wilson’s “report” do any sort of comparison of the statements necessary because of the number of government ‘u-turns’, statements which were ‘economical with the truth’ etc? I thought not!
