Bob Katter’s son Robbie will run for his father’s Australian Party in the seat of Mt Isa in the next state election.

After weeks of speculation, The Australian Party released a statement on Thursday night confirming the 34-year-old councillor will contest the next state election.

“I look forward to contesting the seat of Mount Isa and working with the strong team that is now ready to provide better government for Queensland,” Robbie Katter said in a statement.

“For too long, Queenslanders have been neglected by poor governments.

“The state’s infrastructure has been sold off, its manufacturing and agricultural industries have been destroyed, and the rights of Queenslanders have been stripped away under the guise of political correctness.

“The Australian Party is out to change all of this and I am proud to be part of the team.”.

The party’s state leader Aidan McLindon said Robbie Katter had proven himself in local government and would bring a wealth of experience to the party.

“Robbie has already shown that he will stand up for the community as a local councillor and I am very proud to announce his endorsement today,” he said in a statement.

“We are building a strong team that Queenslanders will have confidence in at the next election.”

Mr Katter was born and raised in Charters Towers in north Queensland and worked in the mining industry and as a property valuer before being elected to the Mt Isa City Council in 2008.

In a statement, the Australian Party said Mr Katter would be pushing for the provision of affordable housing and land and a review of the zoning allowances to reduce the fly-in fly-out workforce and boost local jobs.

He will campaign to stop the further sale of Queensland assets and address the cost of air travel to and from Mt Isa and remote communities.

If Mr Katter is successful, he will be the third generation of his family to be elected to parliament following his father and grandfather Bob Snr, who was a federal MP for more than 23 years.
